Naaz Joshi - First Transgender Person in the World to Win an International Crown Against Cis-gendered Women



Naaz Joshi was born on December 31, 1984 in New Delhi, India. She is India's first international transgender beauty pageant, transgender activist and motivational speaker.

Joshi won the Miss World Diversity Beauty Pageant three times in a row. She is India's first transgender cover model. She is the world's first transgender woman to win an international beauty pageant for cisgender women. She is the first transgender model in India.



She was born as Aizya Joshi to a Muslim mother and a Punjabis Hindu father. At the age of seven, her family sent her to live with distant relatives in Mumbai to avoid social ridicule of her feminine behavior. She worked in dance bars and restaurants to earn a living. She then enrolled in the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and completed a formal course in fashion design.

At the age of 18, Naaz met her cousin, Viveka Babajee, a famous Mauritian model. With Viveka's help and support, Naaz joined NIFT and studied fashion design. After Viveka committed suicide in 2010, Naaz decided to follow her unfulfilled dream of becoming a model and say goodbye to the design world. She then completed her MBA in Marketing at the Institute of Management Technology in Ghaziabad.



Joshi works as a prostitute to earn money for sex reassignment surgery. In 2018, she announced she faced gender discrimination after her booking was rejected by a hotel in Gurgaon. Although initially, a junior hotel employee contacted by the Hindustan Times said the reservation had been canceled due to "gender reasons", this was later denied by the general manager, who said that "the Allegations of discrimination of any kind are untrue" and the hotel has yet to confirm Joshi's booking as it is still awaiting approval from the regional sales office.




Naaz is a proud mother of two daughters, she adopted them when her family immediately abandoned them, told the New Indian Express she said her young daughter is the child of a 16-year-old girl. age and the mother threw her child in the trash.

The status of India's transgender population improved when NALSA succeeded in having transgender people recognized as a third gender by the Supreme Court of India on April 14, 2014. She has also won the titles of Miss Republic International Beauty Ambassador 2017 and Miss United Nations Ambassador. In winning this particular title, she told Indulge Express that winning the crown gives her more power and responsibility to society, with the goal of bringing the transgender community into the mainstream.




Joshi won Miss Diversity World for the first time in 2017 and retained her title the following year. She then became the first transgender woman to win the title for the third consecutive year in 2019. The win also makes her the first transgender person in the world to win the international crown for transgender women.

In 2021, Naaz Joshi won the Empress Earth contest, this crown made her India's first international transgender queen with 7 international crowns. Naaz is the first Indian to win the prestigious Earth Empress title. The contest was scheduled to take place in Dubai on June 1, 2021, but due to the pandemic, the contest was held virtual. Competitors from more than 15 countries participated in Empress Earth 2021. The countries that made the top five are Colombia, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and India.
