Alicia Liu was born in Taoyuan County (now Taoyuan City), Taiwan on June 12, 1986. She is a Taiwanese model and television personality, sometimes known by the nickname Xiao Ai.
At birth, Liu was born male, but underwent sex reassignment surgery when she was 18 years old. She rose to fame after several appearances on a parody TV show, but was exposed in January 2010 by a former classmate who posted her graduation photo online. In response, Liu held a press conference where she said she was happy to be a woman and that her past didn't matter but only confirmed that she was transgender woman when interviewed by China Times a week later. With support from family, colleagues and agencies, Liu said: "To go public with my sex change was more of a help for me than hindrance, and it had not affected my life".
