Nathan Westling: The Transgender Male Model Who Returned to the Runway on His Own Terms

Nathan Westling has built an impressive career in high fashion while becoming an important example of transgender male representation in the modeling industry.

Born and raised in Arizona, Westling entered the fashion world at a young age and quickly became a familiar face on major international runways. Before publicly coming out as a transgender man, he had already established a substantial career working with some of the biggest names in fashion.

His modeling work included major fashion houses such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Versace and Marc Jacobs. With his distinctive red hair and memorable presence, Westling became a recognizable figure in high fashion.

Stepping Away From the Runway

After years of working in a demanding international industry, Westling stepped away from modeling in 2018. The break gave him time to focus on his personal life and transition.

In March 2019, Westling publicly came out as a transgender man in an interview with Vogue. It was an important personal moment, but it did not mean leaving behind the career he had already built.

Instead, it opened the way for a new chapter.

Westling spoke openly about becoming more comfortable with himself and looking forward to returning to modeling. His decision also brought greater visibility to transgender men in an industry where openly trans male models have historically received far less mainstream attention.

Returning to Fashion as Nathan

Westling soon returned to the international runway.

In June 2019, he made his menswear runway debut for Prada during the fashion house's Spring 2020 show in Shanghai.

The moment carried special meaning because Westling already had an established relationship with Prada from earlier in his career. This time, however, he was appearing in the brand's menswear collection as Nathan.

His return demonstrated that transition did not erase his years of experience, talent or accomplishments. Instead, he was able to continue his professional career while living more openly as himself.

An Established High-Fashion Career

By the time Westling publicly discussed his transition, he was far from a newcomer to fashion.

Vogue Italia reported that his career had already included more than 100 runway shows, along with magazine covers and advertising campaigns for internationally recognized fashion houses.

That extensive experience is important to understanding his story. Westling was not simply receiving attention because he was transgender. He was an established professional model whose work had already earned him a significant place within the fashion industry.

His transition became another chapter in that career rather than the sole reason for his success.

Representation for Transgender Men

Westling's visibility also matters because conversations about transgender representation in fashion have often focused more heavily on transgender women.

His career helped demonstrate that transgender men also belong in conversations about diversity and representation within modeling.

At the same time, Westling's story is ultimately about more than representation. It is about a professional model continuing a successful career while becoming more comfortable living authentically.

Fashion had already introduced Nathan Westling to audiences around the world. His return to the runway allowed those audiences to see him on his own terms.

His journey remains a meaningful example of how personal authenticity and professional ambition can exist together. For transgender men hoping to enter modeling, fashion or other highly visible industries, Westling's career offers a real example of someone who continued moving forward without leaving his previous accomplishments behind.
