Leo Sheng is a Chinese-American actor and advocate best known for playing Micah Lee in The L Word: Generation Q. As an openly transgender man, Sheng has used both acting and his public platform to help create the kind of representation he rarely saw while growing up.
Born in Hunan, China, Sheng was adopted as a baby and raised in Michigan by two mothers who worked as social workers. He later studied sociology at the University of Michigan.
Sharing His Journey
Sheng came out as transgender when he was young. As he grew older, he began documenting parts of his transition and life online.
He has explained that much of the trans representation he encountered when he was younger centered on white transgender men. Sharing his own experiences became a way to provide visibility as a queer, Chinese-American trans man.
An Unexpected Acting Career
Acting was not originally Sheng's career plan.
He was preparing for graduate studies in social work when a casting opportunity led to a role in the 2019 film Adam. Sheng later described how a casting director had contacted him while searching for transgender actors to portray transgender characters.
That opportunity eventually helped lead him to his best-known role.
Becoming Micah Lee
Sheng joined Showtime's The L Word: Generation Q as Micah Lee, becoming one of the show's new series regulars.
Micah is also a transgender man, giving Sheng an opportunity to bring parts of his own experience to the character.
Sheng has spoken about wanting audiences to see transgender men as complete people. Micah's stories explore friendships, relationships, masculinity and everyday life instead of making transition the character's only defining feature.
Representation He Once Needed
For Sheng, representation has a personal meaning.
He has written that he rarely saw anyone who reflected his complete identity while growing up. Today, he has become part of changing that reality for another generation.
His journey from sharing his experiences online to becoming a television actor shows how powerful authentic representation can be.
