Jazz Jennings has spent much of her life sharing her story with the world. In 2025, she reached another important milestone: completing her studies at Harvard University.
The achievement was more than a graduation story. It was the result of a journey that included taking time away from school, returning when she felt ready and allowing herself to follow a path that did not look exactly as originally planned.
Growing Up in the Public Eye
Jazz became known to the public at a very young age as an openly transgender girl.
She later became the center of the TLC series “I Am Jazz,” which followed different parts of her life while helping bring transgender experiences into homes around the world.
Jazz also began creating videos on YouTube when she was young. Over the years, her public presence has made her one of the most recognizable trans women of her generation.
But being visible also came with pressure.
As she prepared to begin university, Jazz realized that she needed time for herself.
Taking a Different Path to Harvard
Jazz was accepted to Harvard but decided to defer her enrollment.
Instead of forcing herself to follow the timeline she had originally imagined, she stepped away and focused on her well-being.
She eventually arrived at Harvard in 2021.
Her college experience included studying Art, Film, and Visual Studies while continuing to explore her creativity and identity outside the classroom.
In May 2025, Jazz participated in Harvard's spring commencement ceremony alongside her friends, even though she still had another semester to complete.
Later that year, she officially completed her Harvard degree.
Harvard itself celebrated Jazz as one of its 2025 midyear graduates.
An Important Message About Success
What makes Jazz's graduation especially encouraging is that her path was not perfectly straight.
She was accepted to Harvard, stepped away, returned and eventually finished.
Harvard's profile of Jazz reflects on this part of her experience. She explained that taking time away gave her space to grow before beginning university.
Her story offers a useful message for young people who may feel that they are falling behind because their education or life does not follow the same timeline as everyone else's.
There is more than one way to reach a goal.
Sometimes moving forward also means knowing when you need time for yourself.
From YouTube to Harvard Graduate
Jazz's story has unfolded across television, YouTube, interviews and social media for many years.
People who first encountered her as a child have been able to watch her grow into an adult, pursue higher education and continue deciding what she wants her future to look like.
Her Harvard graduation adds another positive chapter to that journey.
For trans young people in particular, seeing a publicly out trans woman reach an academic milestone at one of the world's best-known universities can provide something simple but important: another example of what is possible.
Jazz's next chapter is still being written.
But graduating from Harvard is already a milestone worth celebrating.
